ELKINS — The Randolph County Commission provided an update on the new prosecuting attorney’s office building and approved a maintenance agreement for the facility Thursday during its regular meeting at the James F. Cain Courthouse Annex.
In November, the county commission agreed to purchase the Jory & Smith Law Office building located across the street from the Randolph County Courthouse on Randolph Avenue. The price for the building and the property’s parking lot was $426,000.
The money to buy the building, however, came from a grant the commission received as part of the American Rescue Plan.
Commission President David Kesling talked Thursday about how work on the building is progressing and revealed a timeframe for when the new annex may open.
“We are trying to get Michael Parker and his staff moved over into the new building, hopefully by the Forest Festival,” Kesling said. “That way they will get in there before winter arrives. That’s our goal for the move.”
Money received from the same grant is also expected to pay for any remodeling and upgrades to the building.
“We have a crew from community corrections being supervised by our maintenance team and they have been wiping down walls, painting and cleaning,” said Kesling. “Our maintenance guys are updating the lighting because we are switching over from fluorescent to LED lighting. We have also been replacing some hardware and other minor light fixtures.”
Kesling talked about other issues that need to be addressed before the move takes place.
“We have met with Todd Martin from Digital Soup for the security of the building, and that process will hopefully take place later this month,” he said. “I’ve also met with a pressure washing company to get the building pressure-washed, especially around the window seals where the paint is flaking off. I asked them to hit those areas hard, and then our maintenance guys can go behind them and paint the window seals.”
Kesling, along with fellow commissioners Chris See and Cris Siler, voted unanimously Thursday to approve a scheduled maintenance agreement for the new annex with Casto Technical Services. The service fee is $1,080 annually.
“The heating and HVAC systems are having some issues and Casto does work for us all around our other buildings and grounds,” Kesling said. “They have already reviewed the system and done some work for us that needed to be done because of some leaking. So with this service agreement they can come out and take care of any problems we may have.”
